Co-composed by Jacob Barrett, Jose Jugo, Michaela Cornelius and Thomas Bedggood as part of the Musicality Programme, an endeavour of the Latin America Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence (LatAmCAPE) in association with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī, Puentes Abroad in Argentina and Campus B in Colombia.

In 2020, The Latin America Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence (CAPE), in collaboration with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī, Puentes Abroad in Argentina, and Campus B in Colombia, provided four young New Zealand composers—Jacob Barrett, Jose Jugo, Michaela Cornelius and Thomas Bedggood—with the opportunity to take part in a musical immersion experience centred around Latin America, specifically Colombia and Argentina. After participating in a series of virtual seminars, masterclasses, and forums led by Latin American musicians and composers (as well as virtual/in-person mentoring sessions with New Zealand composers), the students were able to gain knowledge and a fresh perspective on the traditional and western-art music fields in Latin America and explore in depth the cultural connections between New Zealand and Latin America. From this experience, the composers drew on the influences of Latin America to jointly create a composition that was recorded at Massey University studios in Wellington.

This piece was named Irisado (meaning ‘iridescent’ in Spanish) to reflect the ever-changing nature of the piece, as well as the enchanting colours that emerge from the music as a direct influence of Latin American musical styles and traditions.
